Number 36 ~ DARKENING OF THE LIGHT

Darkening of the light. In adversity
It furthers one to be persevering.

One must not unresistingly let himself be swept along by unfavorable circumstances, nor permit his steadfastness to be shaken. He can avoid this by maintaining his inner light, while remaining outwardly yielding and tractable. With this attitude he can overcome even the greatest adversities.

In some situations indeed a man must hide his light in order to make his will prevail in spite of difficulties in his immediate environment. Perseverance must dwell in inmost consciousness and should not be discernible from without. Only thus is a man able to maintain his will in the face of difficulties.

For a guy like me, who really dislikes work, receiving this hexagram is always a deflating experience. It's guidance specifically calls for vigilance and diplomacy and this only to hold one's place because otherwise with too much honesty and exposure, even by accident, this is a situation which will cause loss. Sometimes they really are against you. Ick.

this seems to be the perfect winter hexagram. by maintaining the inner light, during these times of darkness, we prevail. in yoga, it's tapas-discipline, constancy, practice.

Thank you both for your varied comments, though both share an underlying theme ... maintaining the inner light is vital during precarious times, as you note, Standing. And as you so aptly put it, Christopher, it's not always easy, especially when doing so goes against unrestrained freedom.

Thank you both for visiting!

That is so true. Thanks, Greg. It's just like on Star Trek. Maintaining the inner light IS vital during precarious times. Thank you for the wonderful insight.
