Concentrating on "Lack"

I realize there is considerable skepticism ~ even mockery ~ regarding the so-called "law of attraction," as popularized by "The Secret" and similar books and DVDs. I openly admit that I think there's something to this "law," even if based only on my own life experiences and observations. I've known too many people who exist in a cloud of unhappiness and despair, for whom life only seems to continue its spiral downward. I've also known people who are positive and optimistic ~ often against all odds ~ whose lives appear to be charmed. We do, in fact, seem to get more of what we concentrate on, more of what we believe in.

But trying to enact the law of attraction for personal gain ~ be it to achieve happiness, peace, love, health or wealth ~ is more complex than simply wanting it to be so. It's too easy, while concentrating on obtaining something, to actually be focused on the lack of it.

This 9-minute video of Esther Hicks "translating" the group of energies collectively known as "Abraham," provides what I consider to be an excellent description of the finer points of how this "law" operates.

Greg, I watched my mother operate her whole ministry based on this and it cut several ways, success and not success, in short it turned out mixed as most life is. I believe there is a tendency to the positive that can be attracted or thwarted, but there is far more to it all than my own desire, even when focussed through positive prayer. There is God's will. There is the momentum and direction of all the other self wills and the conflicts between selves as well as the cooperations and augmentations.

It is too easy to oversimplify the system. Then it is too easy to criticize one's own effort as you have suggested, by showing that one has over concentrated on the lack instead. Maybe. But this is also what is called the analysis of "Job's Comfortors" who try to show how it is Job's fault that the devil is afflicting him. In the book of Job this "comfort" is shown for the shallow analysis that it is.

There is no question that there is spiritual power in claiming. You can also float in the negative without harm by claiming. But nothing like this is certain. Ever. Not on the planet. There is a big difference between the world God permits, this place, and God's world, what this place can be if I enter a practice and claim the kingdom. To keep the kingdom present requires a radical perfection of some kind.

That's why positive prayer and claiming can offer tendencies, maybe even high percentages at times but not certainties.

I love that! It is so indicative that we are indeed God; each a part of the whole and therefore powerful and capable of total happiness and understanding. The law of attraction is a truth that many cannot quite understand for they live in their own minds which is, of course, their own reality. Create what you want. Attract it through indisputable patterns.

cannot see the video...
but you mentioned two great points here... one, taking it simply... and the other, concentrating on the lack...
this is it! we should probe deep into "the secret"... and this happens only through patience and practice -- things forgotthen in the modern rat race...
